How sportsbooks make money

Sportsbooks make money through pricing, vig, hold, and risk management — not by being clairvoyant, though they do enjoy looking calmer than everyone else.

The short answer

Sportsbooks make money by building a margin into the odds. That margin is usually called the vig or juice. Over time, that pricing edge is what the book is trying to protect.

Where the profit comes from

Do sportsbooks always try to balance action perfectly?

No. Sometimes they try to balance exposure. Sometimes they respect sharp money. Sometimes they are willing to take a position. The internet loves the phrase “Vegas knows,” but most of the time the book mostly knows it would prefer not to be hanging a terrible number for very long.
