Isaias Looms Over Alabama-Georgia as South Alabama's 56-Point Bombardment Buries Arkansas State in 105-Point Shootout

The biggest story in college football this week isn't a score. It's a weather map.

With potential Hurricane Isaias churning in the Gulf, Alabama confirmed its Saturday showdown with Georgia remains on schedule. That's the game that matters most in the College Football Playoff conversation right now: a win over the Bulldogs would allow the Crimson Tide to leap Texas for the No. 1 spot in the resume rankings, per CBS Sports' latest tracking. Whether the wind and rain in Tuscaloosa actually show up is the variable no spreadsheet can model.

And then there's the rest of the slate, which, as it turns out, had plenty of its own drama.

South Alabama 56, Arkansas State 49

The most entertaining game on the board. Two teams that spent the early season looking for identity finished it in a 105-point shootout, with the Jaguars holding on by seven. Fifty-six points is a statement. Forty-nine is a statement that almost worked. The Jaguars' offense found a gear that the Red Wolves' defense simply could not answer, and the result keeps South Alabama's season narrative alive while handing Arkansas State a tough one to shake off.

Liberty 35, Sam Houston State 3

No drama here. Liberty controlled the game from the opening whistle and never let the Bearkats find a rhythm. A 32-point margin in a conference matchup is the kind of blowout that reshuffles the power rankings in a hurry and leaves the losing side with a lot of film to watch.

Western Kentucky 34, Missouri State 13

The Hilltoppers did the same thing Liberty did, just with a slightly less lopsided scoreboard. Missouri State managed 13 points, which is enough to keep the game from becoming a rout on paper, but the 21-point gap tells the real story. Western Kentucky's front seven and secondary ran the table here.

UTSA 31, South Florida 24

The tightest result of the night and the one that probably stings the most in Tampa. The Bulls kept it within a possession for stretches, but UTSA's Roadrunners found enough in the fourth to pull away by seven. In a conference where every win is a building block, that's the difference between momentum and a question mark.

What's Next

Friday's slate brings the weekend's first round of real stakes: Florida State hosts Louisville, Iowa travels to Washington, and Wyoming meets San Jose State in the Mountain West. None of those games carry the CFP gravity of Alabama-Georgia, but FSU-Louisville in particular has the kind of midweek buzz that sets the tone for the weekend.

For now, though, eyes stay on the Gulf. If Isaias tracks toward the Alabama coast, the No. 1 conversation gets a whole lot more complicated than a resume ranking.
