BYU's NBA Ascent: Cougars Build Draft Legacy with Big Three, 2025 Prospects
BYU’s ascent as a college basketball powerhouse with NBA draft ties took another step forward this week as head coach Kevin Young outlined his strategy to fortify the roster while positioning the program for sustained national relevance. With three players—AJ Dybantsa, Egor Demin, and Richie Saunders—set to enter the NBA draft over the next two years, Young’s focus on recruiting size and depth has intensified.
The Big Three and Beyond
Young’s “Big Three” of future draft darlings already includes 5-star freshman Bruce Branch III, whose McDonald’s All-American pedigree and U.S. U-18 national team experience have NBA scouts taking notice. Young noted that Branch has set personal goals for his performance, highlighting his determination and work ethic.
Adding to the program’s NBA-ready core are Collin Chandler (Kentucky transfer), Tyler Betsey (Syracuse grad), and returning guard Rob Wright III. Young emphasized the challenges of recruitment, stating that “getting someone into school is harder than I thought.” The staff remains focused on pursuing a specific large player, a pursuit Young described as “months in the making.”
Draft Momentum and Injuries
BYU’s connection to the NBA draft will grow when Demin and Saunders declare this summer. Saunders, sidelined since February by an ACL tear, aims to return for the 2024-25 season, which would provide the Cougars with a veteran presence alongside Branch and Dybantsa. Young mentioned that Saunders’ recovery is “on track,” though the timeline depends on his progress in the fall.
Demin has already become a bridge between BYU’s past and future, showcasing the program’s ability to develop international talent, a theme Young intends to continue. “We’re building for the long haul,” he said.
What’s Next?
As the 2025 NBA draft approaches, BYU’s potential as a producer of NBA talent is becoming increasingly significant. Young remains pragmatic about their goals: “We’re not just chasing wins. We’re building a legacy.”
As the Cougars gear up for a 2024-25 season that could feature three future NBA draft picks, the stakes for their roster moves—and the NBA’s growing interest—have never been higher.
