The Los Angeles Sparks will enter their historic first-ever meeting with the Toronto Tempo Friday night at a major disadvantage, with starting guard Ariel Atkins and center Sania Feagin both ruled out of action. The absences leave coach Curt Miller with limited options as the team aims to make a strong statement against the expansion Tempo.

Atkins’ season took a turn for the worse Wednesday when an uncontacted elbow from Indiana Fever forward Monique Billings sent her to the locker room with a head injury. The Sparks initially listed her as questionable before officially placing her on concussion protocol Thursday, ending her chances of playing in the opener. The 29-year-old guard, acquired in an offseason trade that sent Rickea Jackson to the Chicago Sky, has struggled to find her rhythm in limited early-season action, shooting 18.8% from the field and 0-for-7 from deep over two games.

Defensive contributions haven’t fared much better. While teammate Nneka Ogwumike praised Atkins’ “leadership on that end” and ability to “create extra possessions,” the Sparks now must replace a key perimeter defender and ball-handler against a Toronto team looking to establish itself in its debut.

The injury coincides with another blow: second-year center Sania Feagin is sidelined with a leg injury, further thinning the roster. With development players Kate Martin and Laura Ziegler occupying roster spots but no word on potential activation, Los Angeles faces a tall task in balancing youth, depth, and defensive accountability.

The Sparks’ challenges highlight the tightrope all teams walk in balancing roster construction and health in a condensed WNBA schedule. For Toronto, the opportunity to open with a depleted L.A. squad offers a chance to make an instant statement—but for the Sparks, it’s a test of resilience in their newest chapter.
