Spurs' Adjustments Sink Thunder, Series Tied 2-2

Spurs' Adjustments Sink Thunder

The San Antonio Spurs showcased a dominant performance against the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 4, winning decisively with a score of 103-82. The Spurs' defense was particularly impressive, holding the Thunder to just 18% shooting from beyond the arc and forcing 20 turnovers. This victory highlighted the team's discipline and strategic adjustments.

Trust the Plan, Trust the Rim

The Spurs’ adjustment was straightforward yet effective: they refrained from overcommitting to trap Shai Gilgeous-Alexander at the top of the key. Instead, they allowed Victor Wembanyama and teammates to congest the paint, challenging the Thunder to score from long range. This strategy proved successful, as Oklahoma City, which had performed well from three-point range earlier in the series, struggled significantly in Game 4. Backup shooters Jalen Williams and Aminu Mitchell were sidelined with injuries, but the Spurs’ defensive cohesion made their absence less impactful.

“They were more disciplined,” Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said, per NBC Sports. “When you play 12 playoff games, they’re not all going to be masterpieces.”

Wembanyama anchored the defense with 10 rebounds and three blocks while remaining engaged in the game plan. The Spurs' collective effort in forcing turnovers led to 25 points, exposing the Thunder’s challenges in managing the ball under pressure.

Fox’s Return Adds Worry for Thunder

De’Aaron Fox, who missed Games 1 and 2 due to an ankle injury, made his return with a double-double performance (12 points, 10 rebounds) in 31 minutes. While his contributions on the stat sheet were modest, his presence compelled Oklahoma City to adjust its defensive approach—a significant concern for a Thunder team already facing depth issues. Fox's participation without apparent setbacks is a positive sign for San Antonio moving forward.

What’s Next: Thunder Must Adjust or Falter

With the Spurs taking a commanding win, the Thunder will need to make critical adjustments ahead of Game 5. The Thunder’s offense, heavily reliant on Gilgeous-Alexander and a healthy supporting cast, cannot afford any missteps against a Spurs defense that has demonstrated its ability to counter three-point threats. If the Thunder cannot quickly find solutions with their sidelined players, the Spurs’ defensive strategy may set a precedent for the remainder of the series.

The Spurs have rewritten the narrative. Now, the Thunder must rewrite their response.
